Dreamscape
This piece is inspired by an imagined landscape in a dream. The use of tremolo and harmonics in the strings, and that of pedal and una chorda in the piano, is intended to give a sense of fragility, as if the dreamscape could dissolve at any moment. In addition to this, the piece's tonal centre is roughly A minor. To me, the note A, a sixth above middle C, depending on various factors as to how it is played, is white, connoting dissolution and inconstancy, elements which I strongly associate with the fragile nature of dreams.
This piece was composed in February 2016 and performed by the Aldeburgh Young Musicians in February 2016 in Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh. It was written on a residency at AYM with the Composer Larry Goves and the House of Bedlam.
